Ramsons, Wood Garlic, Moly, Ramsey, Wild Garlic
Alium ursinum
In May 2024 I had never seen or foraged as much wild garlic in the woods on the edge of
the moors. Apart from Wild Garlic other Devonshire old names were Moly and Ramsey. The
old English name for wild garlic was Hramsa or Hramsan (plural), which became Ramsons.
Other English local names include Devil’s Posy, Brandy Bottles and Gypsy’s Gibbles, and
animal names such as Badger’s Flower, Ram’s Horns, and Snake’s Food.
