Shadows and Mist at Grey Wethers

Last summer I walked through Fernworthy forest to Grey Wethers stone circles to sketch.

This year I made this print to tell the story of the sheep who became stones, being the highlight of the legend.

In my print the sheep are shadows, their liminal state before turning to stone, or just a reminder of what the stones once were. It is midsummer night and a nightjar flies by searching for goats. (There is another legend about the nightjar who is also named ‘goatsucker’ as it was believed the bird suckled on goats teats to drink the nourishing milk.)

I attempted to make a noctilucent sky, which is a phenomenon at this time of year especially on Dartmoor, with patches and streaks of light shining through the dark sky.

I have 5 variable prints available from an intended edition of 50:

1/50 has been printed on  antique off white Japanese vegan washi paper 70gsm and I used rag to clean off some of the inked lino sky to make patterns and lighter patches.

2/50 is printed on a creamy yellow Japanese vegan paper 110gsm , and I used the cap of a turkey oak acorn to scratch patterns in the inked lino sky.

3/50 is printed on an off white British vegan paper 145gsm.  This time I printed a pale blue in the sky followed by dark blue and used a brush to make some gentle marks.

4/50 is printed on antique off white Japanese vegan washi paper 70gsm.  I printed white in the sky followed by dark blue, and brushed some gentle marks into the ink.

5/50 is printed on antique off white Japanese vegan washi paper 70gsm and this time I used a rainbow roll in the sky which means a gradual colour change, paler blue at the bottom of the sky to darker blue at the top.

 

All prints individually pressed by my feet and a hand baren using Caligo vegetable oil based ink : Professional quality oil-based ink for block printing on paper. Artist quality made using vegetable oils so can be cleaned up with soap and water rather than solvents. These inks contain high-quality pigments rather than dyes so offer excellent light-fastness.

The size of the print area is 37cm x 37cm on larger paper (43 x 52) to enable a mount.
